During a recent trip, I found myself continually “winning” a lot of games or at least doing “well.” And I caught myself feeling very nearly ashamed about it! (This was of course a false humility!) Though backing off was certainly not the answer! But I found myself asking then what Lord? What do I do instead?
Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 1Co_9:24
So how does one win and not get puffed up? Realizing that only grace wins. That if what we do is only by faith anyway, then what do we have to be proud about anyway? So how do I avoid this pitfall of either backing off and losing or getting puffed and proud about it.
Look to those around me who need HELP. While I am ahead, I can help those around me to also get ahead. During a practical card game ( I was up by MANY points) I did this. And even slowed down in order that others could catch up. Is this not what our Lord also does? Though the race was won before Him (the forerunner), He carefully “herded” His flock, the disciples into this SAME salvation, bringing “many sons to glory.”
It is HIS grace that saves, and not my own. If it’s my own works, this is cheap or a false grace. But a grace that saves and brings many more to glory, then this is true grace. Saving grace, not just for me, but many others around me.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. Joh 12:24
